White House Reveals Government Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.
Formal Statement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.
Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services used by the public and pledged to challenge the moves in court.
This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.
The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a near party-line vote.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.
A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the start of the period.
A public service advocate, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the funding gap.
