No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
