India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Pollution After Diwali

Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Multiple areas of the city recorded an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended limit established by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 soared to of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable limits.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and Recent Changes

Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that blankets the city as winter begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership appealed to the judicial authority to seek a modification of the prohibition.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judges approved the appeal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around midnight to some of the worst measurements seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Regional Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the events.

Long-Standing Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in Delhi have persisted as a serious issue for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak readings ever recorded in Beijing, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Various Pollution Factors

The situation in Delhi is caused by a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring states of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, rural residents illegally ignite agricultural waste to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the city as colder air sets in.

Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million people living in the capital region is enormous, according to various studies.

This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.

Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 early mortalities annually in the city.
