Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a risk of fleeing
Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The former head of state was found guilty of orchestrating a military coup in September and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
