An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Role That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He suggested that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I got free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in multiple respects. I lacked the confidence or nerve to reach out at an prestigious college and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
